This heart of the Capitol serves as a ceremonial center for state funerals, visiting dignitaries, and special ceremonies. Constantino Brumidi painted "The Apotheosis of Washington" inside the Capitol dome in 1865. This painting represents George Washington surrounded by symbols of American democracy and technological progress.

Afternoon Tour of the Capital Building
The Tamarac travelers' first stop was the Capital building. Arrangements were made by Mrs. Mary Ann Doyle through Hillary Clinton's office. Our guide gave us the grand tour of the Capital building and Rotunda. Since 1800, the Capital is where Congress meets to write our nations' laws, where presidents are inaugurated and make their State of The Union Addresses. The beautiful ceilings are decorated with historic images, and the many halls are lined with famous statues and paintings representing people and great events in history. Our guide was very impressed with our students quick response to his questions. It was very hard for our history teacher Mr. Peck not to blurt out the answers!

Tamarac goes to Washington!
On February 1st, 2008, some 9th and 10 grade representatives from the Tamarac School National Junior Honor Society attended the 2008 LEAD Conference in Washington D.C. 34 students and 15 adults rode the bus to the Crystal Gateway Marriot, in Arlington Virginia, near the Pentagon, to attend 2 days of leadership activities that included workshops such as team building games, civic engagement, community leadership and service, leadership styles, making choices, motivation, and self esteem.
Many thanks to parent and staff advisors; Mrs. Doyle, Mrs. New, Mrs. Gilpatrick, and Mrs. Malsh for all their hard work and planning leading up to this amazing trip! 2 years of planning went into fundraising and organizing all aspects of the trip. Parent and staff chaperones assisted the students with organization, traveling details, and the various educational excursions.
Mr. Peck and I were excited to be a part of this wonderful trip, and thouroughly enjoyed the company and sights!
