The Rotunda

This heart of the Capitol serves as a ceremonial center for state funerals, visiting dignitaries, and special ceremonies. Constantino Brumidi painted "The Apotheosis of Washington" inside the Capitol dome in 1865. This painting represents George Washington surrounded by symbols of American democracy and technological progress.

Afternoon Tour of the Capital Building

The Tamarac travelers' first stop was the Capital building. Arrangements were made by Mrs. Mary Ann Doyle through Hillary Clinton's office. Our guide gave us the grand tour of the Capital building and Rotunda. Since 1800, the Capital is where Congress meets to write our nations' laws, where presidents are inaugurated and make their State of The Union Addresses. The beautiful ceilings are decorated with historic images, and the many halls are lined with famous statues and paintings representing people and great events in history. Our guide was very impressed with our students quick response to his questions. It was very hard for our history teacher Mr. Peck not to blurt out the answers!
